What are Essential Oils?

Posted on February 22nd, 2008 in Young Living Oils by Connie

Essential Oils are the subtle, aromatic and volatile liquids extracted and distilled from various parts of plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bark, bushes and seeds.

They are the most powerful part of the plant stimulating regeneration and healing, destroying infections, staving off infestation, and aiding in growth. You can witness this firsthand by cutting the stem of a plant and watching the liquid that comes forth to protect the plant by sealing off the cut.

Plants have been around since the beginning of time and are essential to man’s overall well-being physically, emotionally, and spiritually. They are life giving in a vast number of ways.

According to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese manuscripts, priests and physicians were using essential oils thousands of years for healing the sick, emotional clearing, fragrances & cosmetics, religious rituals, and embalming.

Essential oils were mankind’s first and oldest form of medicine. At one time, they were actually considered more valuable than gold! As the western world of modern medicine progressed essential oils went to the wayside.

Around the early 20th century essential oils were brought back into the medicinal realm for use of their antibacterial properties and aromatic essences.

Science has since developed the ability to research the extensive healing properties of essential oils on a cellular level.

The chemistry of essential oils is highly complex with each oil being very different and unique from each other. There are a large variety of factors that determine their purity and therapeutic value such as soil condition, climate, harvesting, and distillation just to name a few.

However, the greatest factor is the implementation of knowledge and expertise of the grower from start to finish. This is the primary reason why the majority of essential oils available today are not pure therapeutic-grade value and should never be used for medicinal purposes.

Pure therapeutic-grade essential oils cannot be substituted or replicated. So using anything less may not produce the desired results and in fact, can be extremely toxic and harmful.

Do your homework and save yourself the inconvenience and money of using a lesser quality essential oil. And make sure you learn how to use essential oils safely and properly.

Pure therapeutic-grade essential oils are an incredible gift to us. And used correctly can help align one with total well-being. And so it is…

Use and Application of Essential Oils

Various ways of using essential oils can bring you a wide range of benefits — from uplifting you emotionally or healing you physically to flavoring food or cleaning the dishes. Experiment with the following applications to find the ones you most enjoy.

Diffusing

Diffusing essential oils in your home, office and work environment for protection is a perfect way to help you relieve tension, dispel odors, and create an atmosphere of peace and harmony. When diffused, essential oils have been reported to improve the immune system and create a feeling of balance and well-being.

Start by diffusing oils for only 15 to 30 minutes per day. As you become accustomed to the oils and recognize their effects, you may increase the time. The essential oils are dispersed into a micro-mist that stays suspended for several hours to reduce bacteria, fungus, mold, and freshen the air with natural fragrances. Diffusing releases oxygenating molecules, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and antiseptic properties, as well as negative ions, which kill bacteria.

Young Living’s diffuser uses a special air pump custom-designed to disperse the oils in a micro-fine vapor so they stay suspended for several hours and freshen the air with natural fragrances. The diffuser disperses oils without the heating or burning that can render the oil therapeutically less beneficial.

Research shows that cold-air diffusing certain oils may:

• Reduce bacteria, fungus, mold, and unpleasant odors
• Promote relaxation, relieve tension, and clear the mind
• Help in weight management
• Improve concentration, alertness, and mental clarity

This is the most perfect way to improve your home, work or study environment, either to help you relax, relieve tension and headaches, dispel odors, or just create an atmosphere of peace and harmony. Essential oils, when diffused, have been reported to improve immune function and create a feeling of balance and well-being.”

Direct Inhalation

Direct inhalation of the oils is easy and brings many of the same benefits as distillation. Put several drops into the palms of your hands, cup over your nose and mouth, and breathe deeply. You may also apply oils to a handkerchief or tissue and inhale.

Use in Humidifier/Vaporizer

Some essential oils, like peppermint, lemon, or frankincense, make ideal additions to humidifiers or vaporizers. Begin by adding honey, sea salt, or bath salt to the water to emulsify the oils. Next add one to two drops of essential oil directly to the water, increasing the amount as needed.

Bath or Shower

Add two to three drops of an essential oil to our special Bath Gel Base™ for an even dispersion and to prevent stronger oils from stinging sensitive areas. Our essential-oil-enhanced shampoos, conditioners, and bath and shower gels provide all-natural cleansing and moisturizing for hair and skin. For maximum penetration, leave them on the skin or scalp for several minutes.

Direct Application

Essential oils give healing benefits when applied directly to the skin. Because they are soluble with the lipid membranes of cell walls, essential oils have an unmatched ability to penetrate cells and disperse within minutes throughout the body when applied topically.

The longer essential oils stay in contact with the skin, the more likely they are to be absorbed. Rose Ointment™, a mixture of beeswax, vitamin E, and other natural ingredients, was designed for layering on top of essential oils to reduce their evaporation and enhance penetration. It also helps seal and protect cuts and wounds.

In direct application, follow these two tips for safety:

• Always skin test an essential oil before using it. Each person’s body is different, so apply oils to a small area first.
• Apply one oil or blend at a time. When layering oils that are new to you, allow enough time (15 to 30 minutes) for the  body to respond before applying a second oil.

When an essential oil causes discomfort it is because it is pulling toxins, chemical, heavy metals, poisons, parasites, and mucus from the system. Either stop taking the oils for a short time, to make sure your body isn’t eliminating too fast, or dilute the oils with V-6 Mixing Oil until the body catches up with the releasing. These toxins go back into the system if they cannot be released. If a person does not like the smell of an essential oil, it is usually because of an acidic condition in the body.

Wearing as a Perfume or Cologne

As a healthy alternative to synthetic fragrances, therapeutic-grade essential oils are all natural and have long-lasting, distinctive aromas. More and more people are wearing essential oils and enjoying the benefits oil can provide.

Creating a Compress

A compress is ideal for soothing tired muscles or reducing inflammation. Begin by rubbing one to three drops on desired location – diluted or neat – depending on the oil and the skin sensitivity at that location. Cover with a damp towel. (The damp towel should be hot if you are hoping to soothe muscles. To reduce inflammation, use a cold, damp towel).

Next, cover the moist towel with a dry towel and leave in place for 10 to 60 minutes. As the oil penetrates, you may experience a warming or even a burning sensation, especially in areas where the greatest benefits occur. If burning becomes uncomfortable, apply V-6 Mixing Oil™ or any pure vegetable oil.

Massage

To create your own custom massage oil, mix three to four drops of essential oil with 1/2 teaspoon of a massage oil base, such as V-6 Mixing Oil™. You may also use our premixed massage oils, such as Ortho Ease™, Ortho Sport™, or Sensation™, for a soothing massage.

Raindrop Technique™

Raindrop Technique is a kit of highly antimicrobial essential oils designed specifically for topical application during massage. Raindrop Technique was developed as a result of research on spinal misalignments.

Vita Flex Technique

Vita Flex is a specialized form of hand and foot massage that is exceptionally effective in delivering the benefits of essential oils throughout the body. Apply a drop or two of oil to the areas of the feet that correspond to the system of the body you wish to support.

Vita Flex means vitality through the reflexes. It is said to have originated in Tibet thousands of years ago, long before acupuncture was developed. Oils are applied on the contact points, and energy is released through electrical impulses created by contact between the fingertips and reflex joints. This electrical charge follows the nerve pathways to a break in the electrical circuit caused by toxins, damaged tissues, or loss of oxygen. The reflex system encompasses the entire body and mind, releasing many kinds of tension, congestion, and imbalances.

The Vita Flex (VF) numbers correspond to locations on the feet and are noted on the foot chart. Vita Flex and Raindrop Techniques™ are demonstrated and explained on the “Science and Application” and “Raindrop Technique” videos available from Essential Science Publishing.

Dietary Supplements

Oils that are generally regarded as safe, (GRAS) by the FDA, may be taken internally as dietary supplements. Essential oils should always be diluted before being used as a dietary supplement. You may dilute one drop of essential oil in any oil-soluble liquid, such as a teaspoon of honey or 4 ounces of soy or rice milk.

Cooking

Many essential oils make excellent food flavorings — they are much more potent than dried herbs. You may want to experiment in your recipes, but some have found that dipping a toothpick in a bottle of oil and stirring it in the recipe provides sufficient flavor. To maximize the benefits of the oils, add them after cooking to avoid undue heat.

Cleaning

A few drops of oil may be added to the washing machine, the dishwasher, or dishwater to help disinfect and purify. Favorites are lemon, peppermint, Melrose™, and Purification™.

The integral part of the nose responsible for odor detection is the olfactory, consisting of two membranes, one on each side of the mucous membrane covering the bony extension of the nose. The olfactory membranes are very tiny and are well protected by the casing of the nose. They contain about 800 million nerve endings for processing and detecting odors.

People who have turbinate problems, such as a deviated septum, polyps, or who have had nose surgery, may have a very difficult or impossible time detecting the complete odor. The same holds true for people who have worn a lot of make-up, perfume and cologne or used hair sprays, hair colorings, perms and other products with synthetic odors.

How Essential Oils Work

Posted on February 21st, 2008 in General Health,Young Living Oils by Connie

This article is discussing the properties of Therapeutic-Grade essential oils only as there are many essential oils on the market today stating they are pure and even organic. While that may be true, their processing methods generally change that. Many essential oils today are processed or cut with toxic chemicals to make more money and can be harmful to your health. They will not give you the same experiences as described in this article.

One way to know if essential oils are processed with toxic chemicals is to carefully read the label. If it says ‘For Aromatherapy Use Only’ that implies that they are unsafe to apply to the skin or ingest, unlike Young Living’s. To date, I have never found another essential oil that I could safely ingest except YL’s.

Generally, price is also an indicator. Pure Therapeutic-Grade essential oils are costly to make. So make sure to read the labels and ask questions about how the oils are processed before purchasing. Many people have experienced adverse reactions including severely burnt skin from using oils processed with toxic chemicals.

How Essential Oils Work
Clinical research shows that essential oils have the highest frequency of any natural substance known to man, creating an environment in which microbes cannot live. They are the heartbeat of the plant kingdom, and this heartbeat is the energy that was created to sustain life. A healthy body from head to foot generally has a frequency ranging from 62 to 78 mHz. Dis-ease generally begins at 58 mHz.

In the resin or oil being released from the plants, we find trace elements of nutrients, hormones, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, antibodies, and antifungal, antibacterial, anti-infectious, antiseptic, and immune-stimulating properties. Another key agent found present in that resin is OXYGEN.

The oxygenating molecules transport the nutrients to the cells of the body. Without oxygen nutrients cannot be assimilated, leaving us nutritionally depleted. Therefore, the oxygenating molecules in essential oils can help the body receive and assimilate nutrients to maintain health.

When applied to the body by rubbing on the feet, essential oils will travel throughout the body and affect every cell, including the hair, within 20 minutes. They will even penetrate a finger or toenail to address fungus underneath.

Essential oils may have a lasting effect for as long as five months from only one application. The oils do not build up and store in the body because they are very subtle and volatile and have a high evaporation rate.

Essential oils can also detoxify petrochemicals from our bodies that we are exposed to on a daily basis. The most common forms are air pollution such as: gasoline and diesel exhaust, fossil fuel burning, and crude oil refineries, and the myriad of petrochemicals found in our homes and personal care products such as: shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, insect repellents, carpet shampoos, perfumes, cosmetics, detergents, and household cleansers, etc.

It has been said that when essential oils are diffused in the home, they have the ability to increase the atmospheric oxygen, as they release oxygenating molecules into the atmosphere. Oils increase ozone and negative ions in the home, which inhibit bacteria growth. This prevents and destroys existing odors from mold, cigarettes, animals, etc.

Essential oils have the electrical magnetic attraction to fracture the molecular chain of chemicals and take them out of the air, rendering them non-toxic to the body. Scientists in European countries have found that essential oils will bond to heavy metals and harmful chemicals and carry them out of the body.

Essential oils work as natural chelators, detoxifying these toxic substances directly out of the tissues. Essential oils remove dust particles out of the air and, when diffused in the home, can be the greatest air filtration system on the market.

Our sense of smell has the longest recall of all the senses affecting:

1. Our emotions and memory (the Limbic System)
2. The pituitary regulation (Hypothalamus)
3. The release of hormones and body regulation (Pituitary)
4. Odor identification (Olfactory Cortex)
5. The connection to the Neo Cortex (Thalamus)
6. The intellectual connection (Neo Cortex)

Ways to use aromatherapy products include:

• Massage (body care through the sense of touch)
• Olfactory/Psychological (products to enhance emotional wellness)
• Therapeutic (products to encourage natural healing)
• Aesthetic (products used on the skin or scalp, for example an aromatherapy facial)

Many scientific experiments have shown that essential oils can travel with relative speed when applied through massage or aromatherapy inhalation.

The molecules of essential oils are so microscopic that they can penetrate the fatty layers of the skin. The lipid solubility of Essential Oils also allows them to travel directly through the cells. Their penetrating ability through the fatty tissue layers into the interstitial fluids, may explain why essential oils enhance circulation and why massage with essential oils can be so beneficial.

If there is one BIG reason to use essential oils every day, it is OXYGEN! Essential Oils are loaded with at least 50 times more oxygen than what plants give off. While essential oils may contain hundreds of different elements, three primary elements common to all oils are hydrogen, carbon, and OXYGEN.

In effect, each time you inhale essential oils or apply them to your body, you are increasing the oxygen level of your body helping it to purge toxins and fight off disease pathogens. Using essential oils on a daily basis may help build a superior immune system.

Furthermore, essential oils have the ability in their chemical structure to penetrate the cell wall and transport oxygen and nutrients inside the cell, thus increasing cellular oxygen and giving more support to the immune system.

Research has shown that with their immune-stimulating properties, essential oils enhance and support the building of the immune system, whether they are inhaled or rubbed on the body topically. Even those who contract a cold or the flu recover 70 percent faster using essential oils.

The key to vital health is prevention through choosing to use healthy products without harmful toxic chemicals. By using YL’s essential oils, personal care, and cleaning products daily you can prevent numerous ailments and health issues from arising. And so it is…
